Do you find yourself losing control of your emotions? Has this been something with which you’re struggling? Maybe it’s even something that someone has pointed out to you recently.
Although you probably feel bad about this, you should know that you’re not alone. While Christians are transformed to be like Christ (– 2 Corinthians 3:18),
How to Stop Losing Control of Your Emotions
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. – Ephesians 4:22-24
Your emotions are a part of you, but they don’t have to control you. Unfortunately, there are many Christians who allow themselves to be controlled by their emotions. Not only is this unhealthy, but it’s also ungodly.
Although it may seem challenging to make this change, herein lies the key: This change isn’t yours to make. It’s God’s. Don’t believe me? Check this out.
Don’t Adopt the Wrong View of Emotions
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. – Jeremiah 17:9-10
An essential part of ending the cycle during which you’re losing control of your emotions starts with how you view them. God never intended for us to use them as a guide. Therefore we shouldn’t be saying things like, “I feel,” or “Follow your heart/gut.”
Your emotions aren’t facts. They stem from your thoughts, attitudes, opinions, desires, and beliefs. These are things that come from your heart. Specifically, they come from what we treasure in our hearts. Therefore they aren’t reliable and shouldn’t be used as guidance for your response.
Adopt the Right View of Emotions
Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out. – Proverbs 20:5
Although you should stop losing control of your emotions, they still serve a purpose in your life. They’re there to serve as a guide. For instance, when you’re overcome with sorrow and start singing praise songs, you’ll draw closer to God and start to feel better.
There are also times when God uses our emotions to encourage you to look deeper at what’s in your heart (remember, this is where your emotions stem from). So, the next time you’re feeling a strong emotion about something, turn to God. Take time to ask Him what your emotions are trying to tell you instead of losing control of your emotions.
Remember: You’re equipped with everything you need to live a Godly life!
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. – Romans 12:2
The Christian journey isn’t one we can live out of our strength. Instead, it’s one we must allow God to live through us by way of submission.
When you submit to God, He’ll give you the guidance and wisdom you need so that you can stop losing control of your emotions. In other words, He’ll provide you with self-control.
Take time to submit to Him fully today. Ask Him to fill your heart with His Words and ways. Seek after the type of self-control that only He can provide, and soon you’ll find that you’ll stop losing control of your emotions.
