What are some of the thoughts that continually go through your mind? Whether you realize it or not, there’s always something there. Sometimes it’s good and purposeful but at other times it can be self-defeating. Now that we’re entering a new year, it’s a great time to renew your mind.
Ask God to Guard Your Heart
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. – Romans 12:2
Your mind is the center of your intellect, reasoning, and intentions. This is also where spiritual transformation occurs. Therefore, by renewing your mind you’ll determine that your life follows God’s will. Make sure you always ask Him to protect, direct and renew your mind so He has control of your emotions at all times.
Recognize Self-Focused and Self-Defeating Thoughts Aren’t From God
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God – Ephesians 6:17
The adversary would love nothing more than to get a foothold in your mind. In doing so he can easily distract and disarm you. As he does so you’ll start to feel a sense of heaviness because you’re entering into a spiritual battle. You can only win this battle when you renew your mind through prayer and reading God’s Word. When you feel as though you can’t pray for yourself, reach out to your church family so they can pray for you.
Stop Focusing on Yourself – Start Focusing on God
Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. – Colossians 3:2
Once you recognize the enemy and ask God to renew your mind it’s up to you to meditate on God’s Word and not be consumed by the things of this world. This will require you to take purposeful action to set your mind on Christ so that it doesn’t go wherever it wants to go (which is nowhere good).
Rest in this truth: You’re Accepted in Christ
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: – Romans 8:16
Sometimes you’ll be successful in taking these steps to renew your mind, but other times not so much. However, as you work on this the more it’ll come to you naturally. Regardless of how you feel you’re doing, there’s one truth that you can always rest in: You’re God’s child. This means that you’re at peace with Him and no accusation can stand against you.
Accept God’s Gracious Gift, and Rest in It
God desires for you to be transformed into the likeness of His son Jesus. As you take time to renew your mind you’ll become more focused on God’s will. What thoughts are keeping you from knowing His will for your life this year?
